Hey Hesham,
CPRI is essentially a huge stream of continuous digital I/Q samples (8-20 bits wide) currently run over fiber. So even lower level than the symbols). The goal is to send compressed versions of these samples over Ethernet. We would not change Ethernet at all of course. Rather it would specify the Ethertype, how the payload is encapsulated, how bit the frames are, where the boundaries are etc.
The main application is probably indoor pico cells so that they could be controlled using CRAN technology from a short distance away although a longer distance Front Haul solution for outdoors is possible too .. albeit at much higher data rates.
